Letter From The President

Exploring new ‘Frontiers’ in the treatment of dissociative disorders

Martin J. Dorahy, PhD

Dear ISSTD Colleagues,

We stand on the verge of a historic moment for the ISSTD. Very soon we will launch our long awaited, much anticipated and rigorously toiled-over E-Journal, Frontiers in the Psychotherapy of Trauma and Dissociation. Four years after the birth of ISSTD in 1984, the Society began to publish the iconic journal DISSOCIATION: Progress in the dissociative disorders. Under the stewardship of Richard P Kluft, MD, PhD, DISSOCIATION became a vehicle for communicating cutting-edge clinical insights, hard fought therapeutic wisdoms, as well as technical and process advances in the treatment of dissociative disorders.

Students & Emerging Professionals

September is Student & Emerging Professional Month

For most students and emerging professionals, commencing work in the trauma and dissociation field can feel daunting, lonely, and even overwhelming. ISSTD recognizes this and offers a program of special support to student members and emerging professionals.

As part of this, in ISSTD September is Student and Emerging Professionals (SEP) Month and we take this opportunity to promote the services offered.

Students and Emerging Professionals Committee

Publications of Interest – August 2017

Dan Nothmann, PsyD, Editor

A sampling of recent articles on PTSD focusing on factors of reslience. Boelen PA, Lenferink LIM. (2017) “Experiential acceptance and trait-mindfulness as predictors of analogue post-traumatic stress.” Psychology and Psychotherapy. 2017 Jul 14. doi: 10.1111/papt.12138. [Epub ahead of print] PubMed PMID: 28707425.

OBJECTIVES: Experiential acceptance and trait-mindfulness are associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after traumatic events. This study was a preliminary attempt to examine (1) associations of experiential acceptance and trait-mindfulness with post-traumatic stress (PTS) associated with negative, but not necessarily traumatizing, life events (‘analogue’ PTS), (2) the role of these variables in the context of neuroticism as well as worry and rumination – two other regulatory strategies associated with PTS, and (3) the impact of pre-trauma tendencies towards experiential acceptance and mindfulness on analogue PTS.

Call for Nominations for 2018 Board of Directors

Being a member of ISSTD is an experience of being part of a warm, wise, professional family. I often hear people talk about the value of being connected to this group, how it helps them with their clients, and with their growth as a person, therapist, teacher, or researcher.

ISSTD has been growing and moving forward.  Conferences, Regional Seminars, Webinars, the Professional Training Program, the Virtual Book Club, and launch of the Clinical E-Journal have all increased the ways in which we learn from each other and share our knowledge with the world.
