Research Special Interest Group Update & Upcoming Event

The Research Special Interest Group (SIG) is where ISSTD researchers meet to interact, learn, and collaborate. Our members range from those highly established in their fields, to early career investigators and students – essentially, anyone interested in learning more about research. We continue to organize events two-to-three times per year, both via Zoom and in-person. We are excited to announce our upcoming event:

LEAP: McLean’s Lived Experience Advisory Panel

Tuesday, November 17th, 4-5pm Eastern US time

Description: Inclusion of lived experience perspectives in research is increasingly recognized as an essential part of successful and ethical research practice. This is especially important for research in the area of complex dissociative disorders, such as dissociative identity disorder, because the experience is highly unique to each individual. In this moderated panel presentation, the Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) of McLean Hospital will share their own experiences with research involvement, what they have found particularly meaningful, and their hopes for the future of the field.

Presenters: What began as an informal advisory group in 2016 has been recently formalized into the Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) at McLean Hospital. LEAP members are all survivors of childhood trauma and have been diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). More than that, however, LEAP members are mothers, sisters, grandmothers, neighbors, college graduates, researchers, university professors, artists, health care workers, high school teachers, and activities. Together, LEAP helps to inform clinical and research programs, develops Participatory Action Research projects, works to destigmatize DID through sharing their personal experience, and promotes social justice and foster inclusion. Their generous sharing of expertise has already resulted in meaningful impacts on DID research, including guiding research design and interpretation of findings, as well as co-authorship on published manuscripts. Earlier this fall the Research SIG held its third annual “Feedback Sessions” event where students and early career researchers presented their newly developed ideas for feedback and encouragement. This year’s expert panel included Drs. Mary-Anne Kate, Ruth Lanius and Michael Salter. Presenters included Lisa Panish (presenting on identifying and aiding victims of CSAM), Yawen Ning (presenting on how women with CSA and IPV experience intimacy & reproductive existence across lifespan), and Davina Sanders (presenting on autism, trauma and dissociation). Additional feedback will soon be shared with those who were not selected for the live event.
