Virtual Book Club Update

The Virtual Book Club is a free educational forum for all ISSTD members that highlights journal articles and books from mostly current publications in our field, although at times we discuss archival classics as well. We have the unique distinction of including authors in our listserv format discussions, providing everyone the opportunity to ask questions and give comments to those who are shaping the field of trauma and dissociation.

We have had a busy year in 2024, following an equally busy 2023. As we began in 2023, we have continued to focus on various chapters in the Dissociation and the Dissociative Disorders book as it holds a treasure trove of perspectives for our field. This past year saw six chapter discussions, while last year we conducted eight. Our discussions have been quite robust with 168 members enrolled in total.

In the coming year we will be joining with the Deep Brain Reorienting Special Interest Group (DBR SIG) in discussing a new book by Frank Corrigan and colleagues, Deep Brain Reorienting: Understanding the Neuroscience of Trauma, Attachment Wounding, and DBR Psychotherapy. Virtual Book Club members will join discussions of this book for the first conceptual chapters, while the DBR SIG will continue with the more specific clinical applications. You can register to be part of this book club which will begin on January 13 here:  ISSTD Virtual Book Club & DBR SIG – Deep Brain Reorienting: Understanding the Neuroscience of Trauma

In addition, we have tentative plans for later in 2025 to explore chapters in the recently released book edited by Middleton and Dorahy entitled Contemporary Perspectives on Freud’s Seduction Theory and Psychotherapy: Revisiting Masson’s ‘The Assault on Truth.’ We want members to know that we are always receptive to suggestions regarding literature to discuss.

Our current committee members include myself, Lysa Toye, and Christine Rothberg, although regrettably Christine must leave us shortly after the New Year. We are looking for new volunteers to help out with deciding on literature to discuss, contacting authors and coordinating schedules, as well as moderating discussions. If you are interested, please fill out the volunteer position interest form here. Please contact us at membership@isst-d.org if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Rick, Lysa, and Christine
