ISSTD Member Dr. Audrey Zatopek wins the ACES’s 2024 Outstanding Dissertation Award
The Outstanding Dissertation Award is awarded by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) in the United States to one exceptional student per year. Dr. Zatopek won this award in 2024 for her dissertation study titled “Discovering Counselor Experiences of Receiving Dissociation Education During Master’s Coursework: A Quantitative Study.” The results suggested that a significant majority of counselors in the sample (N = 362) perceived that they received none (n = 47, 13%) or a low (n = 252, 69.6%) amount of dissociation education (n = 299, 82.6%), as well as less dissociation education than they would have liked (n = 317, 87.5%), during their master’s level coursework. Interestingly, there were no significant differences in the dissociation education of participants based upon demographic variables, nor their institution’s CACREP accreditation status or religious affiliation. Through this study, Dr. Zatopek has potentially identified an existing gap in counselor education programs concerning an entire chapter of the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
