Growth and Integration in ISSTD: A Society on the Move

Martin Dorahy, PhD

Dear ISSTD Colleagues,

The Board of the ISSTD continues to work with members of the Society to solidify the strategic and functional elements of the ISSTD to provide different learning opportunities for members and a strong foundation for our ongoing growth. Most recently, our educational offerings have included a regional conference in Alaska, for which Kimber Olson and her hard-working organizational team deserve much thanks, and a webinar featuring past ISSTD president Richard Chefetz, who is one of the ‘giants’ in the field of trauma and dissociation.

Thank You to Our 2017 Donors – Consider a Gift to ISSTD

The ISSTD exists to better understand those with dissociative disorders and complex trauma and it naturally has an interest in all forms of psychological trauma. It provides guidelines, training, accessible literature, and ongoing professional development for those who work, and do research in our field. Our Society endeavours to make membership of our field career enhancing and as professionally safe as possible. Our office bearers are volunteers and they do many things from writing the Treatment Guidelines for DID, organising regional seminars, writing this Newsletter, through to putting together the components of our Professional Training Program (PTP) or convening great conferences incorporating cutting edge speakers and a vibrant social program.

Regional Conferences

Anchorage Regional Conference Recap

The ISSTD Alaska Component Group hosted Renee Marks and Jim Knipe at our first annual Regional Conference, June 12-17 in Anchorage, Alaska. Despite unforeseen delays in our ability to market the event and issues related to the venue, the conference went smoothly and was a success. Special thanks to our supporters, Alaska Women’s Health Services, Changing Tides LLC, Studio One Pilates, Alaska Pacific University and North Star Behavioral Health. We would like to recognize Sarah Mills, Maria Ballard, Jessica Mixon, Alex Lorian, Logan Larson, and Kimber Olson for their efforts in advertising, organizing and volunteering throughout the event.

As a result of the dedicated efforts of the ISSTD UN Task Force members, the ISSTD has achieved consultative status with the United Nations.  After many preparations and much anticipation, our first representative visited the United Nations New York City office in May! Lisa Danylchuk, who has worked on the task force for the past two years, was honored and excited to represent us on this visit and to begin to develop our consultative relationship with the UN.
